Dear members,
We would like to inform you that on Saturday, November 29, there will be a large inter-union protest against the unjustified attacks on our fundamental rights as labour workers.
Instead of dealing with the real issues facing this province, such as job losses, the homeless, affordable housing, the education system, our healthcare system and the exodus of our doctors, and Trump’s tariffs on our wood and aluminum.
This government’s #1 priority is to attack unions and take away our right to strike. Don’t be fooled by the smoke and mirrors the CAQ is creating to avoid answering for the billions of dollars of our money that this government has wasted. (L.A. Kings, SAAQclic, Northvolt, SIFA, 3rd link)
Why is it important for you to make a stand?
- The CAQ wants to restrict your right to strike
o Strikes are a last resort to improve our working conditions.
o On November 30, 2025, with the adoption of Bill 14, the Minister of Labor will be able to end a strike under the pretext of public well-being. - Bill 3 will impose a hefty bill on the local
o For Quebec, we are talking about a direct transfer of $38,000,000 from the pockets of the workers to those of the accountants. - Bill 3 limits the union’s ability to challenge laws and policy decisions that affect its members.
- The CAQ wants to silence critics by limiting unions’ freedom of expression.
- It violates the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms and the right of association.
If there was a time that you needed to make a stand, it is now on Saturday nov. 29.
You cannot let this Government take away the fundamental thing that your great grandparents, grandparents and parents have fought for.
Whether you are unionized or not, the minimum rights written into the labor code are not there because of the government’s kindness. People fought long and hard to obtain these rights, and unions want to improve these minimum working conditions for everyone. If they take away our right to strike, it will be the end for all of us, unionized or not.
Let’s demystify the minister’s remarks
1. « We’re not doing this against the unions, we’re doing this for union members.” »
So taking millions from workers’ pockets to pay private firms to verify what is already public information is “to help us”?
Does the CAQ really think we’re going to believe that taking money from the 99% and giving it back to the 1% is for “our own good”?
2. It must be that « Union members must have access to information about how their dues are being used. »
This is already the case. It is written in black and white in the Labor Code.
“An accredited association must disclose its financial statements to its members each year. It must also provide a copy of these financial statements free of charge to any member who requests them.” (Section 47.1, Labor Code)
If Minister Boulet wants us to explain how it works, we can give him a brief summary. But reinventing the wheel? that’s going too far.
3. « We are elected to represent the population, including the 1.8 million union members, and that is what concerns us. »
The real moral mandate is not in the National Assembly. It is in the workplace.
4. « The role of unions is certainly not to be political. »
Advocating for decent wages and fair conditions is inherently political.
And if the unions remain silent, only the bosses will be left to be heard.
5. « The reform is not an attempt to muzzle the unions. »
No matter what the CAQ wants to call it, when a government wants to decide who has the right to criticize it, it’s no longer democracy.
6. « This change is made in the public interest. »
If we really want to address the “public interest,” there are urgent issues that need to be dealt with: housing, wages, public services, etc.
We can start there.
7. He wants to find a way to resolve the issue of union dues being used “for purposes that do not always reflect the wishes of the employees represented.” ».
8. « The dialogue remains open. »
A dialogue is when you listen. Not when you keep repeating the same thing over and over again while everyone tells you that you’re heading for disaster. Even his own ministry is telling him to stop!
On November 29, we will gather at Place du Canada to protest against their unnecessary attacks and remind them that we will not be fooled so easily.
Bring your friends, colleagues, and family. We must be hundreds of thousands in the streets to make our voices heard and bring down the curtain on the CAQ’s illusion.
It will be a family gathering, broad and inclusive, open to all those who believe in social justice, strong public services, and the defense of our collective rights.
